Whoa There!

Portion control is critical to long term wellness, and non-optional for peak wellness.  Portion control is critical to living a life free from the diseases of excess/affluence.  A single post can’t cover the benefits of eating what your body needs, not what your mind wants.  And trust me when I write that these things are entirely different beasts (and that this distinction takes some time to experience and appreciate).

How much is right?  That depends on you!

It’s very difficult to try and recommend calorie amounts for an entire population, I certainly wouldn’t want to attempt it.  Here are some of the factors that will influence what the right number of calories a day are for you:

Activity levels

The body burns energy a few ways

  • Basal Metabolism – The energy you burn to stay alive.
  • Physical Activity – The energy you burn with physical activity.
  • Thermic effect of food – Energy needed to digest your food.

Organ Balance and Health

In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), organ health is critical to a body that is fully well.  If you have an organ that is taxed – in a pre-disease state, out of balance – it can and will affect you.  Talk to a doctor skilled in acupuncture or Qi Gong.

Trust me when I say that if you have an organ that is weak and needs toned/balanced, and it becomes balanced following the recommendations of a skilled Chinese doctor, you’ll be shocked at what results are possible.

Basically, when your digestive organs are in balance, you burn food efficiently, deriving maximum nutritional benefit from them.

Body Type

I’m focusing on TCM more here because of its usefulness in describing the expression of the condition within your body.  In TCM, according to Dang Yi:

  • Yang and Hot
  • Yin and Cold
  • Phlegm and Damp
  • Dry Type
  • Neutral Type

Please visit his site, I can’t improve on his descriptions.  These types of distinctions will help everyone make choices around what to eat and how much to eat.  Much, much more on this later!

Back to portions and to my title.

Eating the right number of calories of the right food is very critical!  If you need help, consider talking to a wellness coach or nutritionist, especially one that’s familiar with TCM and plant based diets.

So where do you get yourself into trouble with portions?  An American restaurant (pictured in post)!  Try setting aside your fist full, then boxing or sharing the rest. If you’re eating low fiber food – try mixing it with high fiber foods (green stuff).  😉
